Market Crash: Opportunity or Disaster?
30 July 2015: Investment Seminar
GYC organised an investment seminar on 30 July 2015 at Sheraton Towers Hotel.
There is a prediction going around of a market crash happening on 13 September 2015 – the 29th day of Elul of the Jewish calendar, following the seven year cycle of economic crashes (1994, Sep 2011, Sep 2008, Sep 2015, etc). What should an investor do? Are there reliable indicators of an impending market crash? Is it possible to avoid losing money in a major market crash?
During the great financial crisis of 2008, many investors were scared out of the markets after it crashed, becoming so risk averse that they failed to participate in the strong recovery to regain their lost capital. So, is there a reliable indicator to tell us when a market crash is truly over and when you should get back into the markets?
The seminar opened with a talk entitled "Is there a Market Crash coming, and what should you do about it?" by our Deputy CEO, Aw Choon Hui, addressing the 13 September rumours and how our proprietary GYC Risk Matrix can help signal periods of significant market stress as well as signal when it is safe to get back into the markets.
This was followed by a talk by Liu Hern Kuan, from Rajah & Tann, who discussed important tax issues that High Net Worth individuals need to be aware of.
Lastly, we had a panel discussion with Anthony Raza from UOB Asset Management and Albert Tse from Schroders Investment Management on the topic of whether it is still safe to invest in equities.
